"The Question Behind the Fast" (Zechariah 7:1-14) - Daily Manna - 08/11/26
God is not merely interested in our religious activity—He is after our hearts.
In Zechariah 7, a delegation comes to Jerusalem with a simple question about fasting, but ADONAI responds with a much deeper question: Why are you doing what you do? Had seventy years of fasting, discipline, and exile actually produced a heart that knew Him?
This powerful passage challenges us to look beneath our spiritual routines and examine what they are producing in us. God calls His people beyond outward observance into lives marked by justice, chesed, compassion, truth, and genuine surrender. The question is not simply whether we pray, fast, worship, serve, or give—but whether those things are drawing us closer to His heart and making us more like Him.
When pressure, pain, and difficult seasons come, perhaps the question is not only, “When will this be over?” but, “Lord, what are You revealing and producing in me?”
