"Rivals for Our Affections" (1 John 2:15-17) - Daily Manna - 06/04/26
The world is always competing for your heart—but not always in the ways you expect.
In 1 John 2:15–17, John gives his first major call to action: “Do not love the world or the things in the world.” But this is not a call to stop loving people, creation, or culture. It is a warning against loving the darkness, values, cravings, pride, and self-rule of a world system that stands apart from the Father’s love.
This teaching unpacks the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the boasting of life, tracing these patterns back to the Garden and showing how Yeshua overcame the same temptations in the wilderness. The issue is deeper than a checklist of “worldly” behaviors. It is about what is shaping our desires, what is competing for our affections, and whether the love of the Father is truly being expressed through us.
The world is passing away, but the one who does the will of God abides forever.
