"Almost Obedient: The Danger of Incomplete Surrender" (1 Sam. 15) - Shabbat - 02/28/26

Feb 28, 2026    Rabbi Cosmo Panzetta

What if your “yes” to God is hiding a quiet “except”?

In 1 Samuel 15, Saul almost obeys—and that “almost” costs him everything. This teaching exposes the danger of incomplete surrender: the subtle ways we keep what we value, sacrifice what we don’t, and then convince ourselves we’ve “fully obeyed.”

You’ll see why partial obedience is still disobedience, why obedience begins with a surrendered will, and why worship without obedience becomes noise. If you’ve ever rationalized “just one thing,” feared people’s opinions, or tried to manage appearances while ignoring the heart—this message is a loving wake-up call.

Key texts: 1 Sam. 15; Exod. 17:14; Deut. 25:17–19; Prov. 3:5; Rom. 8:6–8, 13; Jer. 17:9; Luke 18:18–23; 1 John 3:18

👉 The question isn’t, “Did I mostly obey?”

It’s: Have I surrendered the whole canvas to the Master?
